The best CBN products are often promoted as sleep inducers, but these cannabinoid oils, gummies, and capsules may provide so much more!

Cannabinol (CBN) is the newest trend in hemp cannabinoid wellness. Typically included in sleep-promoting products, CBN shares many similarities with CBD.

But before you buy CBN online, it’s important to choose the right product from a brand you can trust. That’s why we put together a list of the top options, based on the formula, price, potency, third-party tests, and other factors.

Read on for our reviews of the best CBN products for sleep and a guide to everything you need to know about this beneficial compound.

What is CBN?

Cannabinol (CBN) is one of over 140 phytocannabinoids, the main active ingredient in cannabis. ¹ It’s considered a minor cannabinoid because cannabis usually contains small amounts of it.

CBN isn’t made directly by cannabis plants. Instead, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) gradually breaks down into CBN when exposed to oxygen. ²

CBN appears to have many potential benefits but is most popular for its supposed sleep benefits.

It’s sold in the same wide variety of products as CBD, including oils, gummies, and capsules. These products typically contain larger concentrations of CBD and smaller amounts of CBN.

How does CBN work?

Just like other plant-derived phytocannabinoids, CBN interacts with the body’s cannabinoid receptors.

More specifically, studies have shown that it can bind to both CB1 and CB2 types of receptors. Unlike THC, which has a strong attraction to the CB1 receptor, CBN seems to have a stronger affinity for CB2 receptors, which are widespread in immune system tissues. ³

It’s likely that CBN also affects other parts of the body and works in synergy with other cannabinoids. But so far, we know fairly little about how it works.

CBN and sleep

CBN is most popular for its supposed sleep-promoting effects. Cannabis users have long noticed that aged cannabis (which contains more CBN) makes them more sleepy. Naturally, they assumed CBN was the compound responsible.

But the evidence for this claim is lacking. There’s been only one real study of CBN on sleep. Conducted in 1975, it found that CBN had no sedative effects of its own but increased the drowsiness caused by THC. ⁴

Therefore, some speculate that in order to fall asleep and stay asleep, it’s best to mix CBN and THC. Or, to incorporate full-spectrum CBD and other cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant.

Still, a 2021 paper concluded that there isn’t enough evidence to support any sleep-related claims related to CBN. ⁵

Other potential HEALTH benefits of CBN

Similar to CBD, CBN has been shown to have a wide range of potential benefits:

  • Relieving inflammation ⁶
  • Increasing appetite ⁷
  • Protecting brain cells against damage ⁸
  • Antibacterial and anticonvulsant effects ⁹ ¹⁰
  • Pain relief ¹¹
  • Neuroprotective properties

Still, most of this evidence comes from animal and petri dish studies. Researchers need to conduct more high-quality research before we fully understand CBN’s potential.

What’s the right CBN dosage?

There are no official dosage recommendations for CBN. The right amount to take varies by individual, depending on body weight, product type and strength, the severity of symptoms, and other factors.

The best starting point is the amount suggested by your product. If it’s not enough, you can try increasing the dosage and waiting a few hours to observe the effects. If needed, continue increasing the CBN dose until you find the amount that works for you.

You can also use the dosages recommended for CBD, which is another non-intoxicating cannabinoid with many potential benefits.

Types of CBN products

CBN can come in the same wide variety of products as CBD, including oils, capsules, gummies, isolate powder, and more. Oils are considered the most effective, whereas capsules and gummies are more convenient but have reduced absorption. ¹²

Most commonly, CBN is combined with larger amounts of CBD in a full-spectrum formula. That means the product also contains THC, minor hemp cannabinoids, and terpenes, all of which work in synergy.

In other cases, THC is removed to leave behind a broad-spectrum extract. Many products also contain pure CBN and CBD or just CBN on its own.

Lastly, CBN formulations frequently include additional active ingredients, such as melatonin, calming cannabis terpenes, and sleep-promoting herbs.

It’s best to choose full-spectrum hemp products if you’re looking for the greatest effects. ¹³

Choosing the best CBN products

The hemp-derived cannabinoid industry is unregulated. Before buying CBN online, you should consider several factors, including:

  • Third-party testing – reputable CBD companies send their products for third-party testing to prove that they’re safe and effective. These tests check the levels of cannabinoids and make sure there are no heavy metals, pesticides, and other potential contaminants. You should only buy from brands that make these test results publicly available.
  • Hemp source – Since CBD is sourced from hemp plants, it’s important to choose companies that use high-quality hemp. We check where the hemp is grown, whether it’s organic, and other signs of quality.
  • Company Reputation & Transparency – We look for reputable CBD brands by reading customer reviews, checking their website for information about the brand, and other details that signal transparency, like the hemp source and extraction process.
  • Formula – CBN products are available in a variety of formulations. We favor full-spectrum CBN products but pure CBN formulas with multiple additional ingredients can be a good option as well.
  • Potency – Product potency is the amount of CBN and/or CBD in milligrams (mg) per dose. We prefer products that come in multiple strengths so that they’re suitable for both new and experienced users.
  • Pricing – We look for affordable products and list the price per mg of cannabinoids to make it easier to compare product value.
